The baby boomers are retiring. Over the next 15 years, this will lead to much more  corporate succession in Switzerland, especially in small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). Every fifth SME is planning a succession within the next five years. This was the result of a study conducted by the Centre for Family Business with the University of St. Gallen and Credit Suisse. According to the study, around 70,000 to 80,000 SMEs are facing a generational change.

In addition to this development, the group of managing directors, whose age is 25 to 45 years old when management positions are assumed, will only be half as strong in the next decade as the 60 to 65 age group. This reduces the pool of possible successor candidates relative to the number of potential transferees. In view of this, finding a  sustainable successor solution to ensure future development is a demanding mission.
